Lockdown in Karnataka has been extended till June 14 as the positivity and fatality rates remain high in the state and the pandemic spreads to rural areas, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

Sources had earlier said the government was unlikely to change restrictions with regard to intra and inter-district movement. Daily timings for purchase of essentials is also likely to remain unchanged, from 6 am to 10 am, though there is pressure to extend the timing till 2pm.

In discussions on the lockdown, the chief minister and a few senior ministers have been in favour of unlocking in a phased manner after June 7 as Covid cases have dropped by nearly 65% from the peak in the first week of May.

The state’s Covid-19 Technical Advisory Committee, in its report to the government, has said the positivity rate has to fall below 5% and the number of daily cases below 5,000 for restrictions on movement and activities to be relaxed.

A total of 7.2 lakh Covid-19 cases and 8,716 deaths were reported in Bengaluru over the past 61 days, with experts warning of caution as the state prepares to brace for yet another wave.
In 2020, after the lockdown was lifted, Bengaluru witnessed a surge in cases in August and September. There are fears that return of migrant workers, who left the city due to lockdown, may unleash a fresh wave of infections.

The State government had initially announced 14 days of closedown from April 27, but imposed a complete lockdown from May 10 to May 24 as the cases increased. Citing lockdown yielding results and experts advice, it was extended till June 7.
Earlier in the day, State Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai indicated that the lockdown may be extended following Centre’s direction to do so till June 30, and that the Chief Minister would take a decision after meeting his Ministers.

“The positivity rate has not come down completely, it has to come to below 10 per cent, and in rural areas the cases are about 22,000-23,000, it has to go below 10,000, even the number of deaths will have to come down, only then we will be able to manage the health infrastructure,” he said.

Bengaluru North University (BNU) will reserve one seat each in all its PG programs for students who have lost a parent due to COVID-19. The university has 26 PG programmes and the quota will be introduced from the 2021-22 academic year.

Undergraduate students who have passed out of BNU or its affiliated colleges will be given preference. If there are no candidates from BNU, students from other universities can apply, said Vice-Chancellor T.D. Kemparaju.

The decision is likely to be discussed during the syndicate meeting that will take place shortly.

“We want to encourage students whose families have faced distress due to COVID-19 to complete their higher education. We will also examine the possibility of allowing free education for such students,” he said.

The state government on Friday said it is actively considering the option of imposing another complete lockdown in the state after May 10 till May 24th. It is likely to imposed for 14 days. CM Yediyurappa to make announcement soon.

State registering a record number of Covid cases despite a 14-day corona curfew in place, Earlier, Yediyurappa had said the Janata Curfew currently in force was not being followed strictly. It has become inevitable to take stricter action and might impose lockdown.

Bangalore: The state government is planning to open graduate colleges in the state amidst coronavirus infection. In the meantime, lecturers of graduate colleges have been ordered to perform their duties from home till November 11.

Preparations for the commencement of classes for the academic year of 2020/21 are available from 4.11.2020 to 11.11.2020 for the faculty of all government and private aided colleges/departments in the department to prepare for digital learning, online/offline teaching, study material preparation, etc. Approved to perform.

The directive also stipulated that instructors who were instructed by the Principals to attend the college’s emergency work should be compelled to attend exams.

UGC has asked all the varsities to start first-year classes from November 1, 2020 and admission schedule conclude by Nov 30. The classes can be conducted in both online or offline modes, as per the necessity.

University Grants Commission, UGC has directed all the varsities to start the classes for the new sessions from November 1 onwards, as per the revised academic calendar approved by UGC on Monday. The first-year classes for undergraduate and postgraduate courses can begin in November. The varsities have been asked to wrap up the admission schedule by November 30.

The alternative academic calendar released by UGC on April 29 suggested that classes of first-year students should begin on September 1 and final year exams should be conducted from July 1 to July 15. However, due to the pandemic, the calendar had to be revised and the high education regulator mandated the conduct of final year exams or terminal semester exams by September end.

But now, as per the revised guidelines, the academic session 2020-21 may begin from November 1 for first-year students. In case there is a delay in the declaration of results in the qualifying exam, the universities may plan and start the academic session by November 18. While speaking to the New Indian Express, the Vice-President of UGC said that there is no hard and fast rule on holding online or offline classes.

The commission further added in the revised calendar that a full refund will be made on account of the cancellation of admissions/ migration of students up to November 30. Thereafter, on cancellation/ withdrawal of admissions up to December 31, 2020, the entire fee collected from a student be refunded in full after deduction of not more than Rs 1000 as processing fee.

Thus, the merit or entrance based admissions for UG/PG students should be completed by October end and the remaining vacant seats should be filled up by November 30.

Meanwhile, UGC has also asked the universities across the nation to start the process of provisional admission for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The admission process for UG/PG courses for the academic year 2020-21 has already been concluded on August 31, 2020. However, the Commission has directed to conduct provisional allotment till September 30, 2020.

Usually, Bangalore University (BU) declares results late. But this year, that has changed. The university declared the results for some of its engineering courses in less than 90 minutes of conducting the last exam. On Saturday, BU announced the results of final semester BE in Civil and Mechanical engineering streams.

Many final semester engineering students were waiting desperately for the results as many of them had job offers in hand and have to submit their scorecard by September 15. A few others are also eyeing the public works department (PWD) posts for which September 16 is the last date to apply.
Hence, University Visvesvaraya College of Eng-ineering (UVCE, which is affiliated to BU) had to race against time, claimed the college’s principal HN Ramesh.

Ramesh told BM that final year exams were delayed this year due to the outbreak of covid-19.
Then, following the UGC’s guidelines, the theory papers were held on September 1, 3, 5 and 8 and the practicals began from September 9.

The university asked evaluators to begin their jobs from the next day of the exam itself.

However, the challenge was the exam on September 8 after which they needed to quickly evaluate the answer sheets.
The tabulation for the theory papers were carried out and when the practical exams concluded at 5 pm on Saturday, the marks were added to the theory papers and the results were declared.
The results were announced by 6.30 pm.

Over the last five months, several faculty members from distance education courses or universities conducting online education have gone mute, say students. Students have made several complaints to the universities that their distance education courses have come to a halt and there is no communication from the university. Neither are online classes conducted nor are any materials updated on the websites.
When the pandemic hit the state, many universities decided to call off the physical classes and conducted online classes to complete their syllabus. The Ministry of Education also allowed conducting online examinations at the university or college level. But, between all these orders and guidelines, the distance education programme students have been suffering.
A student said, “We are in our first-year post-graduation program and we have paid our fees last year. Technically our first year is almost coming to an end in a month or so. But we have not had classes, no assignments have been given and no information on the first-year exams. The university said that due to the pandemic, the academic year has been affected.”

Professor BC Mylarappa, in-charge director of Bangalore University’s distance education department said, “We are thinking of starting physical classes from September 5 so why should we bother with online classes? The government is saying Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) is the only university that should run distance education. So, we do not know what to do.”
While Mylarappa openly agreed that no classes for distance education have been conducted, students questioned their completion of the year. Another student said, “I have applied for National Eligibility Test (NET) test and I’m also pursuing my Master’s Degree at KSOU. Even after a year, my academic year is not over. If my NET results are declared I will need my Master’s Degree in a year to apply. But nothing has happened at the university, not even online classes.”

Professor Lingraju Gandhi, registrar of KSOU said, “There are departments who are conducting the online classes. We are also waiting for the Directorate of Distance Education to release the academic year schedule for the upcoming semesters. On the basis on that, we will take a call on how we need to adjust classes. But, for the pending years, we have already called for examinations and applications are open.”
KSOU Vice-Chancellor Professor Vidyashankar said that he would look into the matter.

After two students in Bangalore University (BU) in Jnanabharathi campus tested positive for covid-19 on Friday, all students in the campus hostel to undergo testing.

This happened after the final year undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students returned to the hostel last week as they had to attend the revision classes for the final examination, scheduled this month.

The Vice-Chancellor of BU, professor KR Venugopal said that the two students who are tested positive have been sent to two city-based hospitals.

He said, “We are monitoring the health of all students and will get everyone tested. We are in touch with the health experts and want all students to undergo RT-PCR tests as many of them have undergone antigen tests which are not accurate.”

Bengaluru: Students appearing for their examinations will not be charged for bus tickets while travelling from their residences to the allotted examination centre, an official release from the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) . This applied to all the Universities and exams

Bangalore University U.G Exam Are going to Start from 12th Sep.

Students will be able to travel between their residences and allotted examination centres by either showing their student bus pass or the examination hall ticket.

The KSRTC release also stated that the free travel option will be available on city buses, suburban buses Btmc Buses and express buses.

Pranab Mukherjee served as India’s President between 2012 and 2017. His career in politics spanned over five decades. As a Congress leader, Pranab Mukherjee held a wide array of top cabinet posts, including finance, defence, home, among others. Pranab Mukherjee was serving as Finance Minister in the UPA II when he was fielded as a candidate for presidentship. He had defeated PA Sangma with a wide margin to enter the President’s House. However, after serving a five-year term as the President of India, he refused to contest the election again and stepped down due to health concerns.

Pranab Mukherjee hailed from West Bengal. He famously attended every Durga Puja at his home town Mirati in Birbhum district. For his distinguished service to the nation, he was first awarded India’s second-highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan in 2008 and then honored with Bharat Ratna – India’s highest civilian award in 2019.

New Delhi: The e-commerce unit of payment solutions provider Paytm, Paytm Mall, on Sunday said it has not found any security lapses yet after investigating claims of a possible hack and data breach.

The clarification came after US-based cyber research firm Cyble had said a hacker group with the alias ‘John Wick’ was able to gain unrestricted access to Paytm Mall’s databases.”We would like to assure that all user, as well as company data, is completely safe and secure… We have been investigating the claims of a possible hack and data breach, and haven’t found any security lapses yet,” a Paytm Mall spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson added that the company invests heavily in data security, and also has a Bug Bounty programme under which it rewards responsible disclosure of any security risks. “We extensively work with the security research community and safely resolve security anomalies,” the spokesperson said.

Cyble, in a blog, had said: “…it appears the actor gained access to their production database and potentially affects all accounts and related information at Paytm Mall”.Cyble said based on information available to it, the hack happened “due to an insider at Paytm Mall” and noted that the claims, however, are unverified. “Our sources also forwarded us the messages where the perpetrator also claimed they are receiving the ransom payment from the Paytm Mall as well. Leaking data when failing to meet hackers’ demands is a known technique deployed by various cybercrime groups, including ransomware operators.

At this stage, we are unaware that the ransom was paid,” Cybele said. The perpetrator had reportedly demanded 10 ETH (Ethereum) equivalent to USD 4,000. Cyble said it has reached out to Paytm Mall for any comments and is awaiting to hear back.

New Delhi: With the Supreme Court upholding UGC directive that all final year examinations (college and universities) should be completed by September 30, state governments are now planning how to conduct the examinations — the mode, type of questions etc. Bihar, Assam, Odisha and part of Madhya Pradesh are reeling under the flood situation.

Tamil Nadu: Reports said a meeting of all vice-chancellors of the state universities was convened on Satur day to discuss the modalities of the final year examinations. So far, it has been decided that the exams will be conducted entirely online. A few centres can be arranged for students without Internet access. The universities are in favour of keeping the questions objective type.

Maharashtra: Maharashtra will finalise the modalities on August 31. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has asked his ministry to conduct examinations with utmost precaution and in a simplified manner. A six-member committee headed by Dr Suhas Pednekar, vice-chancellor of Mumbai University, has been formed to give recommendations about how to conduct examinations.

West Bengal: Universities are awaiting state guideline in this regard. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said the exams will be held in October before Durga Puja. However, it’s not clear whether UGC will allow any extension of the current deadline.

Several states opposed to the UGC directive of completing final year examinations before September as it will expose lakhs of students to the COVID-19 threat since not all universities, colleges and students have the online infrastructure. But the apex court has upheld UGC directive and said students can’t be graduate without final year exams. The states, at the most, can appeal to the UGC seeking some relaxations but all states will have to conduct final year examinations.

The K-set was scheduled for the day of the police examination. The test date has now been postponed. The k-set test is given in Sec. 20s instead of s. Scheduled to run on the 27th.
